Acknowledgments This anthology would not have been possible without the support and assistance of a number of individuals, and it is our pleasure to thank them here. The book had its origins in a conference held at Georgetown University in March 2003. That gathering came to pass because of the support of Dean Jane McAuli√e; James Collins, who then served as chair of Georgetown’s Department of History; and Ed Ingebretsen, who chaired its American Studies program. The support of our colleagues in Georgetown ’s Department of History has been overwhelming. But we are especially grateful for the active encouragement of our Americanist colleagues: Emmett Curran, Alison Games, Maurice Jackson, Ron Johnson, David Painter, Adam Rothman, and Nancy Bernkopf Tucker. Kathy Buc Gallagher coordinated all of the logistics of the conference with her characteristic skill and wit. Kazuko Uchimura helped splendidly with Professor Furuya’s essay.
