ContemporaryOldTestament Theology AContextualProspectus Whitefolkscalltheirexperience“tradition”; theycallourtradition“experience.” —WillColeman I wishtoreflectuponrecentdevelopmentsinOldTestamenttheology incontextattheendofthecentury,ofcoursepayingsomeattention tomyowneffortsattheproject.OldTestamenttheologyis,inprinciple, problematicbecausethetextitselfisnotintentionally“theological”inany recognizableorconventionalsense,andbecausethoseofuswhoworkat it,characteristicallyChristian,areinevitablycaughtandpulled(either attractedorrepelled),betweentheimmense,undeniablediversityofthe textsthemselves,andtheconsolidatingclaimsoftheologythatarehabitual ,orbetweenthepullsofahistory-of-religionsapproachandwhathas cometobecalleda“canonical”approachthatreadsbythe“ruleoffaith.” Inmyjudgment,moreover,nomorethanaprovisionalsettlementofthese mattersiseverpossible,becausethesepullsandtensionsareinherentin thetaskevenastheyareintrinsictothematerialitself.Thusallourproposals mightproperlyhaveamodestyaboutthembecausehavingfinished, wemustalwaysbeginagain. The1970s:UnravelingthePreviousHistoricalSynthesis ItiswellknownthatOldTestamenttheologyreachedamore-or-less stablepointinthemid-twentiethcenturywiththegreataccomplishments ofWaltherEichrodtinthe1930sandGerhardvonRadinthe1950s,with chapter eight 117 BookThatBreathes.finalinterior.indd 117 10/5/04 5:23:16 PM 118TheBookThatBreathesNewLife G.ErnestWrightbeingthemostdominantandinfluentialinterpretive voiceinthecriticalcontextoftheUnitedStates.1 Thegainsofthesemoreor -lesssyntheticachievementsareimmense;theyprovideabaselineforall subsequentwork,thoughtheproblematiccharacteroftheiraccomplishments becomesincreasinglyevidentatadistance. Inretrospectitisnowclearthatthesynthesis,whichseemedsosettled, hadby1970alreadybeguntounravel.Insidethefield,wecannoticethe emergenceofa“theologyofblessing”byClausWestermann,arecovery ofwisdomasatheologicaldatumbyvonRadhimselfandH.H.Schmid, andadrasticrecharacterizationofthesubtlerelationshipbetweenthe BibleandtheAncientNearEast,especiallybyFrankMooreCross.2 Allof theseinterpretivemovestogethermadethesinglelineof“God’sMighty DeedsinHistory”—focusedasitwasonIsrael’shistorical-theologicaldistinctiveness —lessandlesscompellingasareferencepointfortheological interpretation. Theseinterpretivemoveswerematched,bythe1970s,byalarger,changing interpretivecontext.InsidetheinterpretivecommunityofOldTestament study,therewaswithinthedecadeanexplosionofanewpluralism ofperspectivesandmethods,soonfollowedbyquitedistinctcommunities ofinterpretationreflectiveofnewvestedinterests,newself-consciousness, andnewmethods.Thenewnessincluded,ofcourse,feministperspectives andahostofliberationistapproachesthatrefusedanylongertosubmitto theolddominantpatternsofinterpretation. Oneoutcome,itcannotbedoubted,wasthelossofalong-established coherenceinthefield,thelossofapatternofhegemonicinterpretation thattrickleddownfromoracularcentersofscholarlyauthority.New approacheshavefocuseduponcontextualism3 (especiallysocialsciences andespeciallysociology)andimaginativeconstrual(especiallyliteraryand rhetoricalcriticism),allofwhichexposedoldclaimsof“objectivity”tobe lessthanpersuasive,thatis,ageneralrejectionofwhathadbeentakenas “theestablishedgivens”ofthefield.Withinadecadeitbecameunmistakably clearthatwhathadpassedfor“objectivity”wasmostlyunchallenged ,monolithicdominancethatappealedtothe“historical”asabasisof “proof.”4 Thenewerapproachesarelargelyunimpressedbysuch“historical appeals,”holdinginvariouswaysthat“historical”isaninterpretiveconstrual drivenbyandfilteredthroughanangleofvision.5 Indeed,thenewer perspectiveswillnotacceptthatthereisanyangleofvisionthatisnotin somewayalsoanangleofinterest.
