TheLossandRecovery ofCreationinOldTestament Theology ThereisnodoubtthatOldTestamenttheology,likeeverycritical discipline,isorganizedaroundmajor,shapingmodelsofinterpretation .1 Andthereisnodoubtthatsuchmajor,shapingmodelsariseoutof andinresponsetothesocial-political-culturalcontextinwhichscholarship isundertaken.Inthepresentessay,Iwillexplorethewayinwhicha dominantparadigmhasdictatedthetermsofOldTestamenttheologyin thetwentiethcentury,andthewaysinwhichOldTestamenttheologyis undergoingamajortransformationattheendofthetwentiethcentury. TheMarginalizationofCreationinTheology ItiswidelyrecognizedthatKarlBarth’scommentaryonRomans,published inGermanyin1919,constitutedadecisivechallengetothetheological liberalismofthenineteenthcentury.Inhisearlywriting,Barthposited aradicaldiscontinuityandcontradictionbetween“faith,”asitisarticulated inthegospelofJesusChrist,andallformsof“religion”thatarerootedin culturalassumptionsandpractices.TherecanbenodoubtthatBarth’s programsoughttoprovide,andinfactdidprovide,standinggroundfor thechurchinGermany,asitdistinguisheditselffromthe“BloodandSoil” religionofNationalSocialism.Practically,thatconflictpittedtheConfessing Churchagainstthe“GermanChristians.”Thisconflictwasespecially dramatizedinthelifeandworkofDietrichBonhoeffer,whoseprogram of“religionlessChristianity”surelyreflectsinapracticalwaythegoverning antithesisofBarth.Barth’soppositiontoculturalreligioncametobe expressedasresistancetonaturalreligion,thatis,theclaimthatinthe 83 chapter six BookThatBreathes.finalinterior.indd 83 10/5/04 5:23:01 PM 84TheBookThatBreathesNewLife naturalprocessesoflife,thereisdisclosureofGod,God’swill,andGod’s nature. Whatinterestsusinthatdevelopmentoftheology,isthattheenduring paradigmoftheologyarticulatedbyBartharoseoutofandinresponseto thesocial-political-culturalcontextofcrisisinwhichBarthdidhisearly work.TheBarthianformulationoffaithconstitutesthebeginningpoint andshapinginfluenceforOldTestamenttheologyinthetwentiethcentury ,withitsantagonismbetweenfaithandreligion,whichistobeunderstood practicallyandconcretelyintermsoftheexpressionsofthechurch struggleinGermany. Thatmodelofantagonism,articulatedsharplyintheBarmenDeclaration ,becamearallyingpointin1934.Twoyearslater,GerhardvonRad gavethecontinuingexpressiontotheBarthianprogram,asitpertainsto OldTestamenttheology,inhisessay“TheTheologicalProblemoftheOld TestamentDoctrineofCreation.”2 Itwasinthisarticle(whichadumbrated aspectsofhisepoch-making1938article“TheForm-CriticalProblemof TheHexateuch”)3 thatvonRadassertedthat“thedoctrineofcreation”was peripheraltotheOldTestament,andthattheOldTestamentwasnot,at leastuntilverylate,atallinterestedincreationperse.Thereisnodoubt thatvonRad’sreflectionupon“creation”istobeunderstoodwithinthe contextoftheGermanchurchstruggle. VonRad’sframingoftheproblemtransposedtheoppositionofBaal versusYahweh,IsraelitefaithversusCanaanitereligion,intothechurch struggleinwhichtheopposingreligioncametoberegardedasnatural religion.4 Thistranspositionalertsustothelikelihoodthatfromtheoutset ,vonRad’sunderstandingofcreationintheOldTestamentwasshaped bytheGermanchurchstruggle.VonRad’sculturalcontextcausedhim toposethequestionashedid,becauseCanaaniteBaalreligionwithits accentonfertilitywaseasilyparalleledwith“BloodandSoil”religionin Germany.Insodoing,hemadecreationaquitemarginalmatterinOld Testamenttheology,andhisdecisionhadfar-reachingconsequences. IntheUnitedStates,thissamecontrastbetweenCanaanitereligionand IsraelitefaithwaschampionedbyG.ErnestWright,surelythemostinfluential theologicalinterpreteroftheOldTestamentintheU.S.A.inthis period.Inthreebooks,Wrightarticulatedwhatcametobethestandard categoriesforOldTestamenttheology“asrecital.”5 WhileWrightdidnot maketheconnectionexplicit,thereislittledoubtthathewaspursuingthe lineoffaithversusreligion,asweknowitintheprogramofBarth.Wright BookThatBreathes.finalinterior.indd 84 10/5/04 5:23:02 PM [3.145...
