BiblicalFaithasNarrative, Recital,Confession AnIntroductiontovonRad’sOldTestamentTheology ThereissueofGerhardvonRad’sOldTestamentTheologyisamost welcomeevent,aswelcomeasitisimportanttous.Itisclearthatvon Rad(1901–1971),long-timeprofessorintheUniversityofHeidelberg,is thedefiningandpreeminentinterpreteroftheChristianOldTestament inthetwentiethcentury,andthatthistwo-volumeworkisthedefinitive publicationofhislong,prolificscholarlycareer.VonRad’sworkoccupies suchadominantplaceintwentieth-centurytheologicalexpositionthatit ispossibleandusefultotracetheologicalinterpretationinthetwentieth centuryintermsofperiods“pre-vonRad,vonRad,andpost-vonRad.” Whilethatsequencehasalreadybecome“history”forusattheoutsetof thetwenty-firstcentury,itisclearthattheturnvonRadhaswroughtin expositorymethodandhorizoncontinuestoinformourworkindecisive waysandwillcontinuetodosoforyearstocome. I Noscholar,notevenoneasbrilliantasvonRad,operatesinavacuum orcontributestoourlearningdenovo.Eventhemostinnovativescholar standsinthemidstofaninterpretivetraditionandworkswiththeshape ofquestionsandthehorizonofpossibilitiesthatarealreadyextant,even determinative,inpriorwork,beforenewworkcanbegin.1 Thusitisimportant tosituatevonRadinhisfieldofstudyandtodiscern,asbestwecan, theworkingassumptionsandquestionstowhichhewasanheir.Wemay considerinturnthecriticalandthekerygmaticlegaciestowhichvonRad wasaworthyandimaginativeheir. 60 chapter five BookThatBreathes.finalinterior.indd 60 10/5/04 5:22:52 PM BiblicalFaithasNarrative,Recital,Confession61 VonRadwasofcoursewelleducatedinthebesthistorical-criticaltraditions ofnineteenth-centuryGermany.Thisreferstotheentiresequence of“assuredresults”thatculminatedinthegreatsynthesisofJuliusWellhausen ,whosebookiscommonlyregardedasthegreatcrowningachievement ofthescholarshipoftwocenturies.2 Itiscommontojudgethat thetrajectoryculminatinginWellhausenreceiveditsclearmanifestoin alecturebyPhilipGablerin1787;Gablerassertedthatthepropertaskof OldTestamentscholarshipishistoricalandnottheological.3 Thenegation thatGablersoughttoestablishwasthatscholarshipshouldnolonger operatewithinthecategoriesofecclesialchurchtraditionorbesubjectto itstheologicalrequirements.Thatis,Gablerarticulatedtheemancipation ofcriticalscholarshipfromthedogmaticrequirementsthathademerged intheseventeenthcentury.Positively,Gabler’scategorieslegitimatedfor scholarshipthetaskofhistoricalrecoveryof“whathappened,”ataskthat necessitatedreadingtextsintheirpresumedcontextsoforigin. BecausetheOldTestamentissocomplexandmultilayered,thehistorical questionturnedouttobenosimpleone.Itrequiredgreatattentionto thedelineationofliterarysourcesoutofwhich“history”couldberead;the delineationofsourcesledinturntotheidentificationofdifferent“religious ”picturesandassumptionsreflectiveofdifferentsourcesproducedin differenttimesandcircumstancesandfromdifferentperspectives.Outof suchlong-termscholarlyproblemsconcerningthehistoricalandtherefore thereligiouscomplexityoftheOldTestament,thereemergedapowerful andeventuallydominanthypothesisof“developmentalism”thatwas profoundlydifferentfromanyinterpretationgivenaccordingtoecclesial categories.Thethesisofreligiousdevelopmentalism—fromsimpleto complex,frompolytheismtomonotheism,fromcultandmagictoethics —wasmatchedbyaliteraryhypothesisthatcametobetermed“the DocumentaryHypothesis.” Bytheendofthenineteenthcentury,andfullydominantbythetimeof vonRad,therewasscholarlyagreementaboutthesequenceofsourcesto befoundintheliterature(JEDP).Therewas,moreover,agreementabout thedevelopmentalcourseofIsraelitereligionasitculminatedinthetwin trajectoriesofDeuteronomic-propheticethics(regardedbyGermanProtestant scholarsasthehighestdevelopment)andthePriestlytraditionthat eventuatedinaspectsofJudaismmostdisdainedbythetypicalrational Germanscholarwhohadlittleappreciationforthefunctionorintention ofthesematerials.
