SOURCES AND FURTHER READING This is a very selective bibliography that lists the sources most central to the development of this book and some additional works for those seeking a broader perspective on the Italian in America. Since the 1860s a very large and diverse literature has accumulated on transatlantic Italian emigration. Much of this literature in English has been brought together by Francesco Cordasco in a number of bibliographic guides. These are (with Salvatore La Gumina) Italians in the United States: A Bibliography ofReports, Texts, Critical Studies and Related Materials (New York: Oriole, 1972); The Italian American Experience: An Annotated and Classified Bibliographical Guide, with Selected Publications of the Casa Italiana Educational Bureau (New York: Franklin, 1974); and Italian Americans: A Guide to Information Sources (Detroit: Gale, 1978). In addition, Professor Cordasco has compiled a guide to the Bollettino dell' emigrazione (a publication of the Italian Emigration Commission), Italian Mass Migration, the Exodus ofa Latin People: A Bibliographical Guide to the "Bollettino dell' emigrazione," 1902-1927 (Totowa, N.J.: Rowman & Littlefield, 1980). A more recent publication by Pietro Russo offers an index to the Italian immigrant press, Italian American Periodical Press, 18361980 : A Comprehensive Bibliography (Staten Island, N.Y.: Center for Migration Studies, 1984). Many of the earlier books and articles in English on Italian immigrants are cited in Ralph W. Janeway, Bibliography ofImmigration in the United States, 1900-1930 (Columbus, Ohio: Hedrick, 1934). Several articles about Italians first published in Charities have been reprinted in The Italian in America: The Progressive View, 1891-1914 (Staten Island, N.Y.: Center for Migration Studies, 1972) edited by Lydio F. Tomasi. An extensive listing of largely Italian works is presented in the overview of Italian emigration by Grazia Dore, La democrazia e l'emigrazione in America (Brescia: Morcelliana, 1964).
