Acknowledgments I would like to thank the staff at SUNY press for all their work in producing the book. In particular, James Peltz and Jen Stelling were very helpful in answering questions and guiding me through the process, and Murray Pomerance offered both his enthusiasm for the project and his sharp critical eye. This project began at Carleton University in Ottawa, and I need to thank all the professors and staff within the Film Studies and Cultural Mediations departments. Mark Langer was a great mentor throughout, and Chris Faulkner contributed very useful comments on the text. The Film Studies program gave me the opportunity to teach a course on Scorsese that allowed me to work out the material, and I deeply appreciated all of the students in that class for their hard work and participation . Finally, my colleague and friend Nick Nguyen spent countless hours discussing this subject matter with me, and I am grateful for his interest in the topic and for sharing his opinions and ideas so selflessly. I’ve been lucky to have numerous close friends, in both Canada and South Korea, who have helped me through the process: Dave Musgrave, Andrew and Angie Wilkes, James Missen, Mounir and Isobel Khoury, Trevor Cory, Patrick Artz, and many others I do not have space to mention.
