xxi ACKNOWLEDGMENTS This book emerged as part of the planning for the SUNY Critical Issues conference, Universities as Economic Drivers, which was held in Buffalo, N.Y., in September 2011. We are grateful to all who attended that meeting. Our own understanding of the role of higher education and economic development benefited greatly from the workshops and discussions in which we engaged during our time in Buffalo. We are indebted to many people for their assistance in preparing this volume. While we are sure to inadvertently leave some people out, there are a handful of folks that deserve special recognition. David Wright and Tom Gais provided intellectual support as we conceptualized the scope and purpose of the book. Patti Cadrette and Taya Owens were critical for dealing with the administrative aspects of organizing the project. Jessica Neidl provided much needed support, despite pressing timelines.
