Short Biography of Vern L. Bengtson Vern L. Bengtson earned his Ph.D. at the University of Chicago under the guidance of Bernice Neugarten and Robert Havighurst in the Committee for Human Development . Bengtson’s first and only academic post was at the University of Southern California in the Davis School of Gerontology and the Department of Sociology. While at USC, Bengtson established one of the most long-term research and training programs in social gerontology. His scholarly interest in the “generation gap” spawned one of the most enduring studies in the social sciences: the Longitudinal Study of Generations , a study of families that spans four generations, collecting data beginning in 1971 and continuing for four decades. At the study’s conceptual core were intergenerational solidarity, a construct that describes the emotional, normative, structural, and behavioral factors that bind the generations, and life course dynamics, which locate families at the intersection of personal biography and historical time.
