Appendix This appendix describes the various programs, groups, agencies, and institutions mentioned throughout the book. Brightline Hospital A major hospital on the west side of Detroit. The hospital has a special clinic named Care for You. The clinic specializes in services for women with high-risk pregnancies, which can include conditions ranging from a woman’s age and issues of infertility to substance abuse problems. Females in Trouble (FIT) A nonprofit organization sponsors programs geared toward the self-empowerment of girls and women of the greater Detroit area. The services include a teenage homeless shelter, a mentoring program, and a street outreach program. Hispanic Community Support (HCS) A nonprofit organization that provides a diversity of services to the Latino communities of the greater Detroit area. Hope For Us A city-sponsored program that serves HIV-positive people. The program provides testing for the HIV/AIDS virus, counseling, and outpatient services for HIVpositive people. Life Help A publicly funded substance abuse treatment service center. The center provides outpatient treatment services for alcohol and drug use as well as various types of therapeutic counseling. New Day For Us A small in-patient residential treatment program that supports women with HIV/AIDS who are struggling to meet the demands of everyday living. Parker Hospital A midsized hospital located on the east side of Detroit. Partnership and Participation in Health Organization (PPHO) A nonprofit organization that runs several types of services for HIV-positive people throughout the Detroit metro area. The other tier works on behalf of HIV-positive people as a liaison between other community groups involved in HIV/AIDS issues and city agencies. Although they serve both men and women, the women’s services are the most comprehensive program of its kind in the Detroit metro area. The Engagement Bureau A program sponsored by the city that coordinates HIV/AIDS education and outreach throughout the Detroit Metro area.
