ELORA 191 LIST OF VOTERS WHO WERE PRESENT AND VOTED AT THE FIRST CONTESTED ELECTION IN THE TOWNSHIP OF NICHOL IN 1842 The contestants were James Webster, of Fergus, associated with the Hon. Adam Fergusson in the founding of Fergus and Charles Allan, also of Fergus, but who, as a result of this election moved to Elora. Webster was a Conservative and Allan a Reformer but, in this election politics were very much forgotten. Owing to the burning of the first mill in Fergus, in January 1836, many of the first settlers were almost starving, for their grain was at the mill and burnt. Mr. Webster, having the second store in Fergus, helped the settlers through this period of hard times, and they did not forget him when they voted in this election.
