-14I Walked with My Daughter Today I walked with my daughter today, And for a short time I felt like a giant. Striding slowly across the city with my small friend, Asking and answering each other’s questions About blue Fords And how’s your arm, And trucks that spin on the back, And are you tired of walking? Yep! I walked with my daughter today And the newness of her everything amazed me And I was envious. She heard the bird that only chirped Because I wasn’t listening and she laughed. She saw an auto hydraulically lifted into the air And her blue eyes went wide. She cried when we had to leave Her pretty fish in the aquarium And only left at all on promise of ice cream. I walked with my daughter today Down darkening Denver winter streets, Looking at shadows Where leaves used to be And shivering against the wind. Our hot fudge turned to simple strawberry Because ice cream parlors sometimes Close at four-thirty. But, warmth and laughter and “Isn’t she cute?” Loved an afternoon into evening. -15I walked with my daughter today. Chewing gum and baby’s breath Filled my face and she shouted “gum” And laughed, And I shouted “gum” And laughed as she hugged my neck.
