-18Proposal No. 1 In her room I lay in grey contemplation Of a day and my position in same. Riding the broomstick dreams of rogues out of rhythm, And cowboys out of time; Standing vacantly in empty corrals, Where prairies once were. Searching the biting right angles of a metric world For one long, slow, lingering curve, Beginning at me And be it long enough, Ending at me. I have danced with fools, And felt fit in the rankless wanderings of gypsies; The day-by-day ones. And yet, enough! My heart does not cry, And should the present become the past in failure, I pray my heart should stand as a mountain, That I might cling to its ledges against those Who would cast down stones, To crush what I believe to be Honor and truth.
