SOURCES AND ACKNOWLEDGMENTS In writing this biographical history of the William Bowets Bourn Family, I have had the use of the extensive collections of primary documents, letters, and papers of the Bourn Family. In addition, I have used primary materials related to the business affairs of the Bourns and their associates; correspondence with friends and relatives; and the key collections ofpapers regarding the Empire Mine, the Spring Valley Water Company, Filoli Incorporated, and the Edward F. O'Day Family Papers. Most of these papers are in the manuscript collections ofThe Bancroft Library, University ofCalifornia, Berkeley. Other key sources may be found at the Filoli Center, Woodside, California; the library of the Pacific Union Club, San Francisco, California; and the private collection of Arthur William Bourn Vincent, San Francisco, California. In addition to having had access to these papers, I have also interviewed many people whose memories of the Bourns, the Empire Mine, Filoli, Madrofio, and Muckross helped to give me a sense ofpersonalities, events, and places. People who helped in this way were Arthur William Bourn Vincent, who, as the grandson of William Bowers Bourn II, was able to provide me with striking word-pictures ofthe Bourns, life at Filoli, the Empire Mine, and the visits of the Bourns to Muckross, County Kerry, Ireland. Added to Vincent's memories were those of the late Francis Bourn Hayne, a nephew of William Bowers Bourn II, who provided me with many hours ofgood conversation and storytelling as he recalled life at Madrofio during Sarah Esther Chase Bourn's time. But Hayne's major contribution was saving the Bourn Family Papers, which he donated to The Bancroft Library. Other family members who provided assistance during the years ofresearch and writing of the story of the Bourns were Nell Hayne (widow ofF.
