The clashbetweenWashoeIndians,whoheldthepropertysacred,androck climbers,whouseditsworld-classclimbingroutes,simmeredandperiodically boileduntilitwasresolvedbythefederalcourtsystemin. Throughouttheprocessmyinterestindocumentaryfilmmakingmotivated metotapeinterviewswithclimbersandtribalmembers.Ialso recordedfourpublicmeetingstheU.S.ForestServicecalledtodiscuss theuseofthesite.FromtherecordedmaterialIproducedathirty-minute video,CaveRock:TheIssue,whichwassubsequentlyusedasasource documentinthecourtcases.WhentheNinthCircuitCourtofAppeals issuedthefinal verdictin,MatthewandIdecidedtochroniclethe disputeinbookform. Ourconnectiontothistopicispersonalaswellasacademic.Ilived inSouthLakeTahoe,afewmilesfromCaveRock,formorethanthirty years.IworkedsevensummerseasonsfortheForestServiceatTahoe andmaintainfriendshipswithWashoesandTahoeBasinclimbersalike. Matthewgrewupintheareaandalsohasfriendsamongbothgroups. He wrote a Washoe tribal history for his Ph.D. dissertation and now teachesAmericanIndianhistoryatMetroStateCollegeinDenver.Inthe workthatfollows,hewrotetheWashoeparts,andIdealtwiththeclimbing historyandcourtcases.
