acknowledgments Thousands of prospectors, miners, gem collectors, and geologists have, for more than one hundred years, been picking and poking in the ranges and sandy valleys of the Great Basin. They are the ones who have gathered the geological information about the Great Basin. My role was to piece together that material. Specific individuals, however, were responsible for the creation of the book. Rick Stetter—editor par excellence, river runner, and field companion —helped in a thousand ways from the beginning to the end. Grant money from the Fleischmann Foundation (given to the University of Nevada Press for their Great Basin Natural History Series) funded my research and fieldwork. The geological review of the manuscript was done by John Stewart of the U.S. Geological Survey and by J. V. Tingley of the University of Nevada, Reno. They provided excellent suggestions and help. Eugene Smith and Diane Pyper-Smith reviewed a chapter. Bridget Boulton, a geological editor, made many suggestions of a grammatical and geological nature. Mary Hill and Annette Wenda patiently and accurately copyedited the manuscript . Donna Jadm McKay researched the references and also supplied artwork . Nate Stout drew the many illustrations. Brad Fiero conducted library research.
