The person above all to whom I am grateful is Walter Clark’s son, Robert Morse Clark, who gave his permission for this biography and who provided much invaluable information and over a period of years was always willing to help. My thanks also to other members of the family, Barbara Clark Salmon, David Chism, and George E. Lowe. Several libraries provided help.
