a351a appendix 1 Secular Norwegian American Publications The list of secular newspaper titles is based on inventories of archival collections, references in Norwegian American newspapers , and secondary sources. Johs. B. Wist, Norsk-Amerikanernes Festskrift (1914), gives the most complete early treatment of Norwegian American periodicals. In 1947, in connection with the centennial of the beginnings of Norwegian-language newspaper publishing in the United States, Olav Morgan Norlie assembled an impressive list of these publications, mimeographed as “NorwegianAmericana Papers, 1847–1946.” It is a helpful, even essential tool in identifying publications but must be consulted critically. Norlie in his tally differentiates between secular and religious publications. His list of 569 ventures has nevertheless been cited— disregarding the fact that secular, church, and organizational periodicals are included—as the number of Norwegian-language newspapers published . It might be safely claimed that the total number—from 1847 to the present—of secular semimonthly, weekly, semiweekly, or daily newspapers never surpassed three hundred. Even that figure might be questioned since it includes all titles without taking into account shifting mastheads of single journals.
