228  Acknowledgments This volume grew out of a conferenceheld at Oregon State University on April 29, 2006. The title of the day-long meeting was “Race, Science & Law” and was part of the set of events sponsored by the History Department with funding from the Horning Endowment. The Horning Endowment was established by the will of the late Benjamin Horning in honor of his parents, Thomas Hart and Mary Jones Horning, and it supports two endowed chairs in OSU’s Department of History as well as a large range of public events. The intent of the endowment is to help bridge the sciences and humanities, and this conference is typical of the activities it has sponsored. The editors of this collection (and organizers of the conference), Paul Farber of Oregon State University and Hamilton Cravens of Iowa State University, are very appreciative of the generous funding from the endowment and for the administrative support from the Department of History at OSU. In particular, we would like to thank Ginny Domka and Christie van Laningham, who so professionally took care of all the conference details and arrangements. We also appreciate the support of the History Department faculty and Kay Schaffer, the Dean of the College of Liberal Arts. During the conference, it became evident that the papers hung together in a coherent form—something always wished for in a conference but not to be taken for granted that it will happen! We wish to thank Mary Braun of the OSU Press for her help in guiding us through the process that has now resulted in what we hope is a useful and interesting volume.
