Appendix I. Children at Mackinaw Mission A complete reconstruction of the list of the names of all children who attended the Mackinaw Mission is not possible. However, a fairly complete register of boys and girls who lived at the school can be extracted from two extant catalogs in the papers of the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions . The following enumeration ofchildren who boarded at the mission is compiled from "Children at Mackinaw." 5 April 1833, ABC:18.5.7.I:36. All of the names are those used by or given to each child while they lived at the mission as they appear in the document. Each child's name is followed by their age when they entered the mission, their place of birth and tribal identity with percentage of Native blood, the years they stayed at the mission, and the name of the person or organization supporting them whenever that information is provided. Spellings of names and places are transcribed as they appear on the register. Additional (and sometimes different) information included in brackets is taken from the undated "Catalogue Girls' School Mackinaw" and "Catalogue Boys' School Mackinaw." ABC: 18.6.1.l:26 &. 27. Several names that appear only in brackets are not listed in "Children at Mackinaw," but are included in the second set of registers. Names of the students who lived on Mackinac Island with family or friends, but did not live at the mission, such as Therese La Chapelle, do not appear on this list.
