Volume 3 June 14, 1882-June 2,1884 Berrien June 14th '82 The graduation is over and the first three days of vacation are gone. Our graduation passed off splendidly. Our essays surprised everybody, they were so much better than they expected. We all received quantities of flowers. Et and I each received a lovely hot-house bouquet from Cousin Kitty.l I received ten or twelve in all and a basket and a house [illeg.]. Jule Brown gave me a lovely bouquet almost as handsome as Kitty's. Such weepings and wailings as we had over our examinations. Nevertheless I passed splendidly in every thing but Geometry and I don't know what I stood in that, but I thought I would have to give up at first. Got along all right though after all. The night before our commencement Lillie Howe,* Gene, Et, Jude and Slade and I went to Buchanan to hear their excercises. They were not nearly as good as ours. They only had two graduates and one of the essays was like none of our school essays and sounded very much like the encyclopedia. The other essay was "Success," and was splendid. A lady recited the poem called "The Fall of Dumberton Mills." It made me so sick I though for a moment I was going to faint. I never had a piece affect me so before in my life. I was in the awfullest pain all the time she spoke and thought it would never end, but about five minutes after she stopped I felt as well as ever. We didn't get home until one o'clock. Saturday evening the graduates were given a reception at our house. Et and I flew around all evening inviting people. I didn't want one abit and thought it was nonsense. Felt tired enough to rest after the hurry and worry, but the folks were bound to have one. Over eighty were here and I guess they had as good a time as possible under the circumstances. I had a good time anyway. It was after twelve when they had all gone. Mina Slade stayed all night with me. I took a latin lesson yesterday and have begun to take longer lessons. I want to get to the fifth chapter of Caesar by the first of Sept. and have got to dig to do it. 2 I didn't do any thing but study all day to day, that is hardly anything else, and I played four games of croquet-got beat three of them. Went to the Lodge to night-business rather dull. Ed has the mumps and Jumbo is at St. Joseph. The committee who were to have an entertainment for this evening didn't have any thing prepared and it is postponed until next time. Had two new proposals for membership. Howard Ewalt and Gus Dudly.* It has been a very hot day but is much cooler this evening owing to several showers that we had. I was out in the cherry tree studying during two of the showers. I got a Roman history from George which I am going to try to read between Latin lessons this summer. I feel the need of some knowledge in that direction. Et, Jude and I went up to Buchanan on the six o'clock train with Lora Howe* Monday eve and back on the eight. Free ride. After we came back went down to Et's and from there we four went down to bid Mate Reiter goodby as she left on the train next morning. I got the first strawberries off of our vines sunday. Was up to the farm a few moments this evening. Georgie is getting so cute and fat. Laura is going to put short dresses on him the first of August.3 Dutch took Et and I boating last week. We went up the river and around the island; had a good time. I don't expect to get time to write much this summer. Our dresses and hats came from Chicago to day. I haven't had a horseback ride for a long time; am waiting for my new habit. We xpect Belle this month some time and Mollie is coming in August...
