147 Appendix A Demographic Data According to Voyages, the slave trade database, there were 602,463 slaves imported to Cuba between 1776 and 1850. This is a larger number than the documents at the time record, suggesting a need for much more demographic work in locating the enslaved population temporally and geographically. The slave trade database project information suggests that a more thorough survey of the plantation records may reveal a large portion of this population that was hidden during the counts taken across the island and during regional and local assessments. The data offered here is a small sample to represent the trends that were occurring on the island during the early nineteenth century. The population was expanding steadily over time, but with the exception of 1792, the percentage of women in the population was relatively stable. The 1792 census has been called into question, but I include the information here for comparative purposes. I also include data from three partidos that had significant numbers of cafetales. San Marcos seems to conform to the island-wide numbers, while Puerta de la Güira/ Artemisa and Güines (southeast of the vuelta abajo) show higher numbers of women. It was these sorts of variations that initially caught my attention. As I looked closer at individual plantation records, I began to see how the cafetales had increasing numbers of women while the ingenios had larger numbers of men. 148 Shade-Grown Slavery Appendix A.
