• 89 Turning around to the north from the city of Tiguex and going on for three or four days’ journey, there is a plain some six leagues long. It is full of cultivated fields among stands of pines, which produce wonderful piñón nuts, and other large, graceful trees. Here on the flat plain lies the great and beautiful city called Cicuyo in the tongue of that land. It must have over six thousand large houses six or seven stories high.1 It has two walls, each apart from the other ten paces and about two estados high—more than strong enough for people who do not use artillery. It has towers with very attractive red spires. There are also three large plazas, with many kivas, and all the houses with their loggias2 facing the plazas.
