284 Part One Document 64 Royal Cédula to the Viceroy of New Spain Recommending Don Baltasar Domínguez de Mendoza Madrid, April 21, 16951 Conde de Galve, my kinsman, gentleman of my chamber, viceroy, governor, and captain general of the provinces of New Spain, and president of the royal audiencia of Mexico, or to the person or persons in charge of their government. In consideration of the fact that don Juan Domínguez de Mendoza served me for more than forty years in the wars of New Mexico, achieving by his zeal and intelligence fortunate successes in those conquests, having been badly wounded on two occasions; and because don Baltasar Domínguez de Mendoza, his son, has also striven to deserve well in this kingdom, where he has been alférez real and captain of cavalry,2 all by appointment of the governors of New Mexico; and in consideration of his lack of means, because when he was on his way to Spain accompanying his father, they were shipwrecked, losing all they brought, his father having died thereafter in this capital, I have desired to recommend his person to you in order that in consideration of what both have done worthy of reward in my service, you may keep him in mind and accommodate him in the offices and employments under your provision and favor him in everything else which may offer itself in the kingdom so that he may attain the relief and alleviation which his straitened circumstances necessitate, which I will consider a service.
