B. SONG LITERATURE OF THE VILLAGES One striking feature of village life in the Southwest is the corpus of songs that circulate in a particular region telling of well-known local characters and noteworthy local events both recent and remote. It is easy to identify the narrative poems such as the corrido and the indita, for they are written in a factual way with special attention to dates and often to places. With some exceptions I believe these facts are reliable; in many cases I have verified them. I have omitted from this table many wellknown corridas dealing with places in Mexico.
