N. MISCELLANEOUS SECULAR In this section I have included the secular songs that are, so to speak, left over. The relatively few examples given here are included largely to call attention to the ramifications of the subject of Hispanic folk music that might well be explored further. The first of this group are miscellaneous song texts associated with dances or other social gatherings. India Comanche (N6) is a surviving fragment of a secular folk play which so far as I can ascertain has become virtually extinct. (See also Los Comanches [R1982], the text of a folk play, and R22192221 , three dance songs from Los Comanches .} For social dance music without words, see Section X. Coplas de Circunstancias (N7) is an example of the pleasant custom of the older singers to sing improvised coplas in honor of persons present. The game of the pipes, Juego de los Canutes (N8), a gambling game similar to the moccasin game of the Navajo Indians, was formerly played at social gatherings between two teams who would try to guess in which of three Canutes (decorated pipes) a certain object had been concealed by the other team. This game was presented in a charming manner at the 1972 meeting of the New Mexico Folklore Society and was recorded by the Taos Historical Society. It is possible that Taos Recordings and Publications will publish an album covering this game. The cautivos (N9 and NlO) can be traced back to Spain where they tell of captives taken by the Moors. In the New World the cautivos are about captives taken by Indians. A number of southwestern game songs of children have been collected and published in the Spanish American Song and Game Book (WPA 19). A number of others are scattered through this book, including the romances Cancion del Fraile (Al), Delgadina (A2), Las Senas del Esposo (A7b), Don Gato (A16), Hilito de Oro (A8), and Los Diez Perritos (D28) (see in this connection Matos 8a, Parte Literaria, pp. 74-99).
