WhiletheUnitedStatestriedtodecidewhattodowiththePhilippines, theColoradoansturnedtheirenergiestocontemplationofthestrange landinwhichtheyfoundthemselves.Theirnativistattitudes,honedin Coloradolaborconflicts,filteredtheirimpressionsofthepeoplesofthe Philippinesandtaintedthesoldiers’actionstowardboththeirformer enemiesandtheirerstwhileallies. Pvt. Guy Sims was perhaps one of the few soldiers who, before departingCampAdams,hadgiventheFilipinosanythoughtatall.In thesummerof,wellbeforeeitherthewarorhisenlistment,the young man had been intrigued by news reports of fighting between nativerebelsandtheSpanishgarrisonofManila. Around Manila, Filipino men wore loose pants the Coloradoans describedas“pajamas,”andashirtwithaflowingtail. Filipinasworea shortskirtand“alight‘waist[blouse],”andalmostallmenandwomen wentbarefooted. Americancivilandmilitaryauthoritiessenthomeglowingreports onthenatureoftheFilipinos.UnitedStatesConsultothePhilippines OscarWilliamsconfidentlypredictedthattheFilipinoswouldallywith theAmericantroopstooverthrowtheSpanish,describingthepeopleof theislandsas“brave,submissiveandcheaplyprovidedfor.” Brig.Gen.
