AT INDIANA UNIVERSITY, I thank the research archivists Jeffrey C. Graf and Louise Malcomb who can handle all library tasks; they are a reliance—all libraries need them, and many do not have them. For maps I resorted to the skilled cartographer at Indiana, John M. Hollingsworth. And for word processing my reliance was Betty Bradbury. In the National Archives in College Park, Maryland, I sought out Timothy K. Nenninger, the head of the Modern Military Branch, who when the other Tim, Tim Frank, the freelance researcher, sought him out at once went up into the stacks to find the file in question. The individual who found it, all of us knowing it was there, was the former World War I archivist Mitchell A. Yockelson, who remembered a small collection of cards in the Department of the Inspector General. He experimented with different words in the file’s long title, and an unlikely word opened the file. It was a feat of archival investigation. At the U.S. Army Military History Institute, a part of the Army War College in Carlisle Barracks, Pennsylvania, near Harrisburg, I am indebted once more to Richard J. Sommers. John Slonaker similarly shared his extraordinary knowledge of institute files. Edward M. Coffman again has been wonderfully helpful.
