xi Note on Transliteration Throughout the book, I have omitted the macron, which typically indicates long vowels in romanized Japanese words. I did so for the sake of consistency over what I see as a selective and often arbitrary use of the diacritic. I have also followed the practice of writing Japanese names with the family name preceding the given name; for Japanese who reside and publish their work outside Japan, the given name appears first, as in my own case. Translations from Japanese are all mine unless otherwise indicated. ...
