This book was written on tables and desks overflowing with scribbled notes, printed drafts, and coffee cups in three countries. But it stubbornly refused to stay on those tables or in those notes and has occupied my thoughts and demanded attention at unpredictable moments every day for some five years. At the outset, then, I wish to thank Kiersty , whose editing, companionship, and sacrifices during those five years deserve much more than recognition here. In Makassar I was buoyed by support from Mukhlis Paeni, then director of the Ujung Pandang branch of the Indonesian National Archives; Djohan Selengke, a tutor who gave unflagging support to a student prone to all manner of questions and requests; and the family of Bapak Guntur in Malengkeri, whose open home and warm companionship made my trips to Makassar enjoyable. In Jakarta we were welcomed several times by Damaihati and Rachamat Sudjana. Closer to home I have benefited from the encouragement, advice, and support of many.
