Acknowledgments The ten essays collected in this volume are revised versions of papers presented at an international conference on Six Dynasties aesthetics held at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, November 3–4, 2000. This conference was a sequel to a conference on Liu Xie’s Wenxin diaolong (The Literary Mind and the Carving of Dragons) held three years earlier, as it sought to address various theoretic questions raised at that conference in the broader contexts of Six Dynasties aesthetics and culture. The conference was generously funded by the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, the Center for East Asian and Pacific Studies, and the Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures, University of Illinois. The Research Board of the University of Illinois provided a grant for hiring a graduate student to assist in the preparation of this volume, as well as a publication subvention grant. In addition to acknowledging the financial support of these institutions, I must express my gratitude to my colleagues, students , and the staff at Illinois.
