About the Author haruko wakabayashi received her Ph.D. from Princeton University in medieval Japanese history. She is visiting faculty at Princeton University for 2010–2012. Her work has explored the uses of visual materials such as emaki in historical studies. Among her publications are numerous articles on medieval Japanese social and cultural history, both in English and Japanese , including the coedited volume, Tools of Culture: Japan’s Technological , Medical, and Intellectual Contacts in East Asia, 1100–1600 (Andrew E. Goble, Kenneth R. Robinson, and Harkuo Wakabayashi, eds., Association for Asian Studies, 2009). She has taught at a number of universities, including the University of Alabama, Sophia University, Meiji Gakuin University, and International Christian University. ...
