Abstract

This chapter looks at the efforts to build subway lines along Utica Avenue in Brooklyn and to Staten Island and the work of real estate companies to sell their property based on the promise of subway construction. The expansion of the subway and commuter rail system in New York City and its suburbs were crucial factors in the growth and development of residential and commercial areas well away from downtown areas. Chapter 5 describes the efforts that went into implementing both plans, and how both failed.
