j. congregation anshe obertyn (Congregation of the People of Obertyn) (Demolished) 193 East 2nd Street (between Avenues A and B) in its early years, the no-longer-extant synagogue on this site housed the Zalisczicker Rabenu Ager Erste Verein from Zalishchyky, Ukraine (formerly Poland). By the early 1920s, the building housed Congregation Anshe Obertyn (sometimesspelledObertin)whosemembershadoriginated from Galicia. In the early 1970s, neighborhood vandals burned the nearby chevra Nachlath Z’vi B’nai Israel Linath Ha-Zedek B’nai Menasheh at 289 East 4th Street (founded 1897),andtherabbijoinedwiththefewremainingmembers of Anshe Obertyn to worship at a nearby shtiebl—possibly at Young Israel at 229 East Broadway. A Spanish-speaking Pentecostal church then subsequently purchased the shul, but later disbanded. In 1977, when the City was unable to track down the owners, the synagogue building was condemnedanddemolished .TodaythesiteisoccupiedbyHope Garden, a volunteer-based, mainly Latino neighborhood garden.
