About The Center for International Health and Cooperation and The Institute for International Humanitarian Affairs The Center for International Health and Cooperation (CIHC) is a public charity founded by a small group of international diplomats and physicians who believed that health and other humanitarian endeavors sometimes provide the only common ground for initiating dialogue, understanding and cooperation among people and nations shattered by war, civil conflicts and ethnic violence. The Center has sponsored symposia and published books, including Silent Witnesses; A Framework for Survival: Health, Human Rights and Humanitarian Assistance in Conflicts and Disasters; A Directory of Somali Professionals; Clearing the Fields: Solutions to the Land Mine Crisis; Preventive Diplomacy; the new International Humanitarian Books Series of Fordham University Press–Basics of Humanitarian Missions; Emergency Relief Operations; Traditions, Values and Humanitarian Assistance; Technology for Humanitarian Action; and a standard textbook, Tropical Medicine: A Clinical Text, that reflect this philosophy. The Center and its Directors have been deeply involved in trying to alleviate the wounds of war in Somalia and the former Yugoslavia. A CIHC amputee center in northern Somalia was developed as a model for a simple, rapid, inexpensive program that could be replicated in other war zones. In the former Yugoslavia the CIHC was active in prisoner and hostage release, in legal assistance for human and political rights violations, and facilitated discussions between combatants. cahill.qxp 10/1/2004 1:37 PM Page 277 The Center directs the International Diploma in Humanitarian Assistance (IDHA) in partnership with Fordham University in New York, the University of Geneva in Switzerland, and the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland. It has graduated over 600 leaders in the humanitarian world from 53 nations, representing all agencies of the United Nations and most non-governmental organizations (NGOs) around the world. The CIHC also cooperates with other centers in offering specialized training courses for humanitarian negotiators and international human rights lawyers. The Center has offered staff support in recent years in crisis management in Iraq, East Timor, Aceh, Kosovo, Palestine, Albania and other trouble spots. The Center has been afforded full consultative status at the United Nations. In the United States, it is a fully approved public charity. The CIHC is closely linked with Fordham University’s Institute of International Humanitarian Affairs (IIHA). The Directors of the CIHC serve as the Advisory Board of the Institute.
