Abstract

The chapter opens as the author and his family leave the British camp in the early morning, taking cars outfitted with "bulletproof" mattresses on the way to the airfield. After a minor incident involving a plane's rough landing, they board their flight to Batavia on their way to their final destination of Surabaja. After arriving Surabaja, the author and his family see that the British are in control of almost all of the city, but the fighting still remains hectic. While there, the family stays in a dilapidated hotel in poor living conditions.
