Abstract

In this chapter, the author tells of how he awoke to find the camp entirely deserted of the Japanese officers and guards. He explains that he was originally hesitant to leave the camp on account of his brother's sever illness, and so he attempts to nurse him back to health before leaving. He succeeds marginally, and is able to find his mother in her labour camp. He is eventually able to transport his sickly brother over to his mother's camp, Lampersari, where his brother's life is saved by a veterinarian. He also details a close encounter with the Indonesian Revolutionaries, in which he was almost shot. Later, he again confronts the revolutionaries in an attack on the camp, but he and those inside are saved by acts of selflessness on the part of the soldiers.
