Abstract

The Australian Jesuit, Jackson, went to India in 1961 and has been there ever since. He was inspired by Pope John XXIII's call to open up the Church to all people, and so began his study of Urdu and Persian reinforced by the writings on Islam of Victor Courtois. The chapter focuses on the engagement with Sufism and Christian-Muslim shared spirituality. Since 1976, the author has undertaken translation and commentary on the works of Sharafuddin Maneri. To understand the spiritual writings of another faith, one needs to be able to feel the reverberation of that same journey to God or to exercise "synchronised spirituality." Finally the chapter traces various practical activities of teaching about Islam to Christians in India and supporting them through writing and fellowship.
