Abstract

Even before Hugo Lang was liberated as a German POW, his sister Ruth was already liberated in Poland. Gradually their cousins Siegfried and Kurt, sons of Louis Lang, also returned. All other family members were murdered. Assisted by the Military Government, Kurt became the procurer for the small remnant, reclaiming personal belongings from local families and ordering new furniture from local businesses. The surviving Lang cousins spent time with other survivors, took in other homeless Jews, and actively pursued their dream – emigration to the United States. Waiting for affidavits from their relatives, they lived their lives as best as they could, all the while seeking restitution for the property stolen from them after deportation. In 1946 their dream came true, and they were able to leave Germany for good. None of the three ever returned, starting a new life in the United States instead.
