SUGGESTIONS FOR FURTHER READING There are many excellent resources on contemporary American poetry. References include The International Directory of Little Magazines & Small Presses and the similar butlesscomprehensiveTheDirectoryofPoetryPublishers.Thetwobestmagazinesthat feature news about poetry and poets, interviews, general articles, criticism, etc. are the Writer’s Chronicle and Poets & Writers Magazine. Web sites from The Academy of AmericanPoets(www.poets.org),PoetryDaily(www.poems.com),andVerseDaily (www.versedaily.org) sample poems from current books and magazines and much more. The first part of the following list includes poets and books—not all of them American—that have been most influential for contemporary American poetry. The list contains many of the best poets of the last hundred years, and everything onitisa“mustread”foranypoetryfan. The second part is a fairly comprehensive but not exhaustive list—the first of its kind, so far as I know—of mainly contemporary American poets very much worth knowing. Titles published by University of Pittsburgh Press as part of a prize series are so designated. A full list of titles in these prize series is available at www .upress.pitt.edu. The books I have recommended here are the most recent or the best and most characteristic examples of the authors’ work. My advice is to take this as a checklist and guide for browsing—“browsing” because most of us can’t readeverything,andbecausepoetryisanotoriouslysubjectiveartforthereader. Finally, I’ve included a few recommendations for readable and important critical works on poetry. These are just brief samplings, but serve as a beginning for thoseinterestedinfindingoutmore.
