Acknowledgments This book has its origins in a multidisciplinary 2006 conference held in Nyeri, Kenya, titled Youth in Eastern Africa: Past and Present Perspectives. It was organized by the British Institute in Eastern Africa (BIEA) and the Institut Français de Recherche en Afrique (IFRA) (Nairobi). We thank both institutions and the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs for their financial support for the conference, and we thank the presenters and participants who attended the conference. Although not all the conference papers were suitable for inclusion in a book on the history of youth, the presentations and the debates they provoked have nevertheless shaped this volume.
