96 Gale. The one woman. Joel met her at the University of Utah (see Higher education); they began living together in 1970 and moved to Santa Barbara in 1973. In July 1974 she planned a trip alone to Europe, which Joel (perhaps believing her travel a temporary separation) described in mild terms: “She’s planning a sort of voyage of discovery, hoping to relieve herself of certain doubts she has about the authenticity of her self. This, of course, is expressed in my own terms; Gale simply wishes to try being on her own—something she has never really been.”43 Of her motivations for this separation Gale herself said, “The dreams I thought we shared weren’t there anymore. I was determined to go back to school, to travel, to live frivolously.
