Bibliography Because the purpose of this book was to present E. Y. “Yip” Harburg’s work primarily through interviews, the sources I used were, of course, decided by that task. However, I did use other sources to fill out the story. As this rather unconventional bibliography will show, many of these sources represent Yip’s own work. ARCHIVAL SOURCES My primary archival source was the Yip Harburg Foundation. The small foundation office has a wealth of information and provided me with almost all of the interviews used. The foundation’s website can provide the general audience with a great deal of information about Yip, from news of events to works written about his life to archival material. A portion of the material can also be found in the E. Y. Harburg Papers at the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts at Lincoln Center, but I did not have to use that source. I did use the E. Y. Harburg collection in the Irving S. Gilmore Music Library of Yale University. Much of the material at Yale involves the evolution of each of Yip’s musicals and songs. I was most interested in documenting his political work and found a small cache of items in that collection. I also had access to the registrar’s records of City College of New York, which supplied me with Yip’s college transcript. Otherwise , all of my material was obtained through the Yip Harburg Foundation (www .yipharburg.com). YIP HARBURG’S UNPUBLISHED INTERVIEWS AND SPEECHES I read well close to fifty published and unpublished interviews that Yip gave over the years. The following list includes all of the unpublished interviews and speeches I received from the Yip Harburg Foundation, which I edited and wove into a narrative about Yip’s career.
