Bibliography All the items listed here belong to one of three categories: works that I have used substantially in preparing this book; works that I have not drawn on directly but have found generally interesting and provocative in relation to the issues considered; works that deal specifically with these issues and that I have consequently consulted though I have made little use of them. Any of these, of course, may be of interest to the reader. Theoretical discussions of dance tend to lurk in unlikely places and sometimes emerge from discussions of another subject entirely, which accounts for some of the apparently impertinent titles. Several of the items never mention dance at all, though they are concerned with problems—such as the nature of performance —that are applicable to dance. Some of the latter were among my happiest discoveries, and they form an important part of the bibliography, because they raise questions that have not been treated in books that deal exclusively with dance. My special thanks to the Institute for Scientific Information's Current Contents, which I peruse weekly and which led me to some of the most interesting listings in this bibliography.
