Accounts for Genera and Species 308 Genus Ptychobranchus Simpson 1900 Five species were recognized in Ptychobranchus by Turgeon et al. (1998). An additional species, Ptychobranchus foremanianus, from the eastern portion of the Mobile basin was elevated from synonymy by Williams et al. (2008), bringing the total recognized species in the genus to six. Ptychobranchus jonesi was described as a species of Lampsilis where it remained until a gravid female was examined, and the unique folded outer gill (Figure 10.77) was observed, confirming its placement in Ptychobranchus (Fuller and Bereza 1973). Ptychobranchus is found in Mississippi River and Great Lakes basins and eastern Gulf Coast rivers from Louisiana to Florida. Conglutinates produced by gravid females of Ptychobranchus are interesting mimics of insect larvae, fish eggs, and fish larvae (Hartfield and Hartfield 1996; Watters 1999). Similar Sympatric Species Ptychobranchus jonesi most closely resembles Hamiota australis but is more inflated , has a more rounded posterior margin, and the ventral margin is typically straighter. Also, the posterior ridge of P. jonesi is typically triangulate distally with a shallow radial sulcus between the ridges. Gravid individuals of P. jonesi have swollen and folded outer gills, while the marsupia of Hamiota are swollen but not folded.
