This book represents a figurative and literal journey for me. I began working on it when I was an undergraduate at Shorter College in Rome, Georgia, in 1999. Three years and several thousand miles later I completed it in Fort Worth, Texas, while working toward a PhD at Texas Christian University. Along the way I made many friends who showed me that no man takes a journey alone. The following is my attempt to recognize them for all of the valuable contributions they made. Dr. Keith Bohannon of West Georgia State University; Bill Smedlund of Sharpsburg, Georgia; and Ronald Moseley of Atlanta, Georgia, all played critical roles in this project. They provided me with their research notes, advice, and came to my rescue when I needed help. Ronald spent many weeks at various archives in Atlanta for no other reason than to help me. Dr. Steven Woodworth of Texas Christian University provided valuable guidance on the publishing end of the process, sharing his wisdom and sage advice. This work would have been impossible without the gracious help of Georgia’s professional archivists and public historians. Without exception they generously gave me permission to adapt or outright copy manuscript descriptions they had written.
