Finis December 3, 1866—I now close my journal or record of the war of 1861–1865. It is, of course, very imperfect but will serve its purpose of preserving for future reference the little incidents in my humble military career. And these may in after years be interesting to me or to those who come after me. I will add here that brother James was captured at Deep Creek in Amelia on the 4th or 5th of April, marched on foot to Amelia Court House, and thence immediately to City Point without stopping one hour to rest. There with blistered feet, empty stomach, and dropping spirits he went aboard a steamer and was carried to Point Lookout and con¤ned about 6 weeks and ¤nally released at the solicitation of friends on his parole. During all this time we knew not whether he was dead or alive.1 By superior force and wealth and the active sympathies of all the earth and the permission of Jehovah, they (the North) ¤nally succeeded in crushing our armies and our ¤nances. Some wise purpose which we cannot discern moved the Most High to permit these things so to be. He does all things for the best. Though we can’t see now, why these things should have been permitted, yet since they have been, we must, as a matter of faith, believe that “God is wise in all His ways and good in all His works.” [signed] R.
