A Noteonthe Texts The texts of the thirty-six Marengo Jake tales that follow are reproduced as they first appeared in newspapers; however, due to the poor condition and fading of some of the original copies, we have sometimes had to complete punctuation or missing words, or, in some cases, merely indicate the spaceswhere letters that once existed are now illegible. In any such instances we have placed brackets around the illegible or inserted items. In rare cases, we have also used brackets to correct blatant spelling errors, probably made by the newspaper typesetter. Some confusing inconsistencies in punctuation we have similarly rectified; and a few obvious punctuation errors, silently corrected.
