xiii ACKNOWLEDGMENTS This book owes its existence to many people. Erin Vasseur first pointed out that my research was more than just an interesting collection of arcane facts to be shared with my friends. Dave Stevens provided early support and encouragement for this project. Bill Huntzicker pointed out the close connections among the local newspaper reporters for whom the madams and red-light districts were a source of stories. Gauti Sigthorsson enlightened me that the sex workers, their clients, the politicians, reformers, and respectable citizens were all part of the greater sexual ecology of Minneapolis. Barbara Bezat of the Northwest Architectural Archives patiently answered my questions and tracked down information on the various architects who designed the riverfront bordellos. Edna Brazaitis introduced me to the wonders of the state law library and showed the way to supposedly lost transcripts from the Doc Ames trial. Richard Reed provided help with the genealogy of several madams. Victor Thortenson, with his knowledge of rare books and photographs, helped me obtain some of the illustrations for this project, and Ted Tucker drew the maps. The very helpful staff at Special Collections of the Hennepin County Library referred me to several resources that I would never have found on my own, as did the marvelous reference librarians at the Minnesota Historical Society. The Hennepin History Museum was the source of a photograph with a very rare view of Main Street and a Sanborn Insurance map. Pieter Martin at the University of Minnesota Press encouraged the completion of the manuscript and gave good feedback along the xiv Acknowledgments way, and many reviewers worked diligently as the reader’s friend to make the manuscript readable and offered fine suggestions of sources on nineteenth-century prostitution.
