I would like to thank the many people who did so much to establish Hawk Ridge and to ensure that it will be protected in perpetuity , beginning with Jack Hofslund, who first brought our hawk migration to state and national attention. I am grateful to Karl Bardon, David Carman, Alison Clarke, Kim Eckert, David Evans, Molly Evans, Jan and John Green, David Grosshuesch, Frank Nicoletti, Jerry Niemi, Julie O’Connor, Henry Roberts, Wayne Russ, Sparky Stensaas, Koni Sundquist, and Debbie Waters, who for years, each in their own important ways, have helped make Hawk Ridge what it is. Since I moved to Duluth in 1981, one person has been my biggest source of inspiration in my advocacy for birds. Janet Green has quietly become the Rachel Carson of Minnesota. Doggedly working behind the scenes with governmental agencies, nonprofits, corporations , and individuals, Jan’s in-depth understanding of both birds and the bureaucratic mazes constructed by conservationists and their opponents ever fills me with awe. Her meticulous scholarship, fair-mindedness, tireless work ethic, and unfailing patience and courtesy earn the respect of all who know her.
