About the Author Janice Gould (Concow) grew up in Berkeley, California, attending Laney and Merritt Junior Colleges before entering the University of California, Berkeley, where she majored in linguistics. After graduating with Honors and Distinction in General Scholarship, she continued studying for a master’s degree in English at UC, and upon completion, entered the PhD program in English at the University of New Mexico. She was awarded her doctorate from UNM in 2000. In December 2008, Janice completed her master’s degree in library science at the University of Arizona (as well as the requirements for certification in museum studies from the Department of Art History). Janice’s academic honors include fellowships from the Ford Foundation and the Roothbert Fund, as well as scholarships from the Association of Research Libraries and the University of Arizona’s Knowledge River Program. Janice has published two previous collections of poetry, Earthquake Weather (University of Arizona Press, 1996) and Beneath My Heart (Firebrand Press, 1990). She has also published a chapbook/ artbook titled Alphabet (May Day Press, 1966). Janice’s scholarly publications (co-edited with Dean Rader) include Speak to Me Words: Essays on Contemporary American Indian Poetry (University of Arizona Press, 2003). Janice is the recipient of writing grants from the National Endowment for the Arts and from the Astraea Foundation, a fund for lesbian writers. She is an assistant professor in Women’s and Ethnic Studies (WEST) at the University of Colorado in Colorado Springs.
